May’s blockbuster is finally here. X-Men Origins: Wolverine, starring Australian actor Hugh Jackman reprising his role from the X-Men trilogy, is not a bad movie. There is a lot of action, some pieces of mythology from the comics, and of course, a cohort of mutants with superpowers. There is no doubt you will end up seeing it if you are planning to go to the cinema in the next few weeks!
Wolverine is about the origins of the man who can shave himself with his indestructible metal claws hidden in his hands. The challenge was to satisfy the comic-based audience, who has read everything about the past of the comic character, and the loving action-slash-muscle people, who have found in Hugh Jackman a new male-standard.
Action scenes are quite enjoyable. There are everything you can hope for: fast and empowered with superheroes’ moves. Special effects and make-up are credible. It was a real issue to address, as we all have the previous X-movies in mind. The introduction of new mutant powers, such as Gambit’s (Taylor Kitsch) throwing of kinetic-charged cards, is well rounded and always sober in the exaggeration.
However, as every blockbuster, the film lacks a better plot. The dialogues are hilarious in the bad way, the non-action-based scenes are predictable, and the real X-mythology is scoffed. Some mutants have their entire story rewritten; others are just cameos; and the luckiest are reduced to a soft version of them. It is a relief Wolverine is here to add pure action and fights to quickly forget these mistakes!
X-Men Origins: Wolverine is a good movie to see in order to take a break from reality. It is not a masterpiece, but it fulfills his entertainment role. What more could you ask for?
